Soos ons oor die afgelope tyd in die nuus gehoor het, het die tropiese sikloon Freddy enorme skade en menseverlies in Malawi en Mosambiek veroorsaak. Ons lees in Independant UK van 16 Maart dat vloede en modderstortings die dodetal nog verder kan laat styg.
Malawi
Net in Malawi alleen is alreeds by die 200 mense dood en president Lazarus Chakwera het op Dinsdag ‘n noodtoestand in die suidelike gedeelte van Malawi afgekondig waar daar alreeds 19,000 mense ontheem is.
In ‘n opgedateerde persvrystelling van die regering van Malawi word genoem dat “Cumulatively, TCF–induced flooding, strong winds and mudslides have displaced over 19,676 households (approximately 88,312 people) with 165 camps set to accommodate the displaced. The death toll has risen from 190 (as reported in our previous update dated 14th March, 2023) to 225 with 707 injured and 41 reported missing.” Lees dit HIER.
Ds Vasco Kachipapa, algemene sekretaris van ons susterskerk in Malawi, die CCAP Nkhoma Sinode laat weet vanoggend: “The CCAP Nkhoma Synod is shocked and saddened with the death of hundreds of people who have lost their lives due to the Freddy Cyclone. Many have been injured, lost their homes and other valuable properties. We have announced that on Sunday, 19th March we will have special prayers in all 222 congregations and members have been requested to make donations in kind and in cash.”

Mosambiek
Van ons susterskerk in Mosambiek, die IRM, kry ons vanoggend hierdie nuus van die algemene sekretarisse van die Mphatso en Tumbine-sinodes, ds Samuel Bessitale en ds João Herbath Kachemue onderskeidelik : “Beloved Friends in the Lord, we are writing this with sadness, noting how some parts of Mozambique have been affected by the cyclone Freddy. The areas most affected are: Zambezia, Tête, Niassa, Sofala, Manica, Maputo and Inhambane provinces. But the most affected part is Zambezia and the lower part of Tête.
“The cyclone has left many in a devastated condition. Power poles collapsed, water pipes were broken, houses scrambled, roads are severely damaged and impassable and fields with crops are swept away. Thousands of people are left homeless, without any food, clean water, clothes and blankets to cover themselves.
“Many people have been washed away and lost their lives, and some bodies can not be found where they are. Large numbers of people are accommodated in schools and churches for shelter.
“In Quelimane, the provincial capital of Zambezia, the central hospital has been hit badly. The whole roofing has been blown away, leaving the patients wet. There is no electricity, no clean water. The following number of people have lost their lives in the following places: in Zambezia Province, 58 people, in Tête Province 7 people, in Manica 27 people, in Sofala 35 people and in Niassa, 17 people. In total, 320,000 people have been affected by the cyclone, whereby 22,000 houses have been destroyed. More than 122,000 students are affected and cannot receive lectures. In Sofala and some parts of Tête, 49,000 people are homeless, and 41 people have drowned.
“As a result, there will be much hunger from now forward, as most gardens have been washed away, there will be no clean water, no place to stay and many other problems will follow. In total, 52 hospitals and health centers have been damaged.
“We are in dire need of food, clothes, blankets, iron sheets or plastic papers for making shelters, chlorine for cleaning water and seeds for second planting.
“Let us join hands in prayers for heavenly intervention.”
Danie Murray van Handevat wat tans in Mosambiek op werksbesoek is by die Tumbine Sinode, laat weet dat ds João Herbath Kachemue, algemene sekretaris van die IRM Tumbine Sinode, dit nie sal sê nie, maar hy het meer as een gesin wat hy nie eers ken nie in sy huis geneem omdat hulle huise ingeval het.
