On Sunday 24 November 2024, members of the Uniting Reformed Church of South Africa (URCSA) Makhathini in Kwazulu-Natal gathered at the church building in Jozini to bid farewell to their beloved minister, Rev. Louwrens van der Westhuizen, as he prepares to retire at the end of the month. The service, filled with gratitude, reflection and a deep sense of unity, marked the end of an era for the Makhathini congregation but also affirmed the ongoing work of God’s kingdom in the community.

A Shepherd’s Heart

From the moment Louwrens and his wife, Jeanne, arrived in Makhathini, they brought with them not just their ministry but a heartfelt devotion to the people they served. Rev. Louwrens, who responded to God’s call to lead with both wisdom and compassion, became more than just a pastor—he became a spiritual father, a guide, and a friend. His unwavering faith and commitment to living out the love of Christ have left an indelible mark on this congregation.

In his farewell speech, Louwrens expressed deep gratitude for the congregation’s support over the years, as well as the support of Witness Ministry and many congregations and friends, noting that it was the collective effort of the church community that allowed the ministry in Makhathini to flourish. “I have been privileged to walk alongside you through the joys and struggles of life,” he shared, “and it has been through your prayers, your hearts, and your commitment to the gospel that we’ve seen God’s transformative power at work.”

A Season of Harvest and Gratitude

The impact of Louwrens’ ministry is evident in the many lives that have been touched through his leadership. As the congregation reflected on the years of faithful service, there was a collective sense of awe and thanksgiving for the fruit that has been borne in Makhathini.

A Hopeful Future

As Louwrens prepares to retire, the Makhathini congregation is keenly aware that while they will miss his leadership, they are not without hope for the future. The farewell service turned not just into a moment of looking back, but of looking forward.  The congregation expressed confidence that, despite this transition, God’s plans for Makhathini are still unfolding, and His presence will continue to guide them in the years to come.

A Partnership of Support

The farewell service also underscored the ongoing partnership with Witness Ministry and other supporting churches, which have walked alongside the Makhathini congregation over the years. This partnership, rooted in prayer and mutual encouragement, will continue to be a source of strength and guidance for the church in the years ahead.

“It’s important to remember,” said Daniël de Wet from Witness Ministry, “that we are not alone in this journey. The body of Christ is vast, and we stand united with our brothers and sisters in the faith, both near and far.” This sense of community and shared mission gives the Makhathini congregation the confidence to move forward, knowing that they are part of something much larger than themselves.

A Legacy of Love and Service

As the service drew to a close, Louwrens and Jeanne were showered with heartfelt messages of thanks and love. The congregation expressed its deep appreciation for the years of service, care, and devotion they had given. In his final moments of speaking, Rev. Louwrens shared his thanks, saying, “It has been a joy to serve among you. You have been a blessing to me, and I will carry you in my heart always. May God continue to bless this church, and may His love guide you all in the days ahead.”

In response, the congregation pledged to continue in the spirit of unity and love that Rev. Louwrens and Jeanne had cultivated during their time in Makhathini.

As the congregation sends them forth into the next chapter of their lives, they offer their prayers and best wishes.

“May God bless you, Louwrens and Jeanne, abundantly in this new season. Your legacy here will never be forgotten, and you will always be part of this family.”

And so, as the Makhathini congregation steps into a new season of ministry, they do so with confidence, knowing that the work of God in their midst will continue, and that the Spirit of Christ will guide them forward—just as He has done through the faithful service of Louwrens and Jeanne van der Westhuizen.
